HiCAP 1.0.0 - FAQ

Where does HiCAP store analysis files?
Analysis files are hidden from the user and managed automatically by HiCAP. However, here is the file structure in case you wish to manually handle the files.

File Structure
Project File: Name specified by the user with extension ".PRJ"
Analysis one: Same name as project file but with extension ".1"
Analysis two: Same name as project file but with extension ".2"
Analysis three: Same name as project file but with extension ".3"
Analysis four: Same name as project file but with extension ".4"
Example
CortaroRoad.PRJ
CortaroRoad.1
CortaroRoad.2
CortaroRoad.3
CortaroRoad.4
and so on

If you wish to manually move the CortaroRoad project from one folder to another, you must move the project plus all of its analysis files (i.e., CortaroRoad.PRJ, CortaroRoad.1, CortaroRoad.2, ...)

How do I copy/move analyses from one project to another?
The HiCAP 1.0.0 does not allow one to transfer analyses from one project to another.

I choose the Print/Print Preview command, but nothing happens? (or I only get blank worksheets)
If the Print/Print Preview command does not work on any analysis, then your computer may not have Acrobat Reader (version 4.0 or later) installed. If installing Acrobat Reader still does not solve the problem, try reinstalling HiCAP.

When I print/print preview, I get error messages from Acrobat and cannot print/preview my analysis.
Two things that could have happened are: the printing files got corrupted or the analysis file got corrupted. First, replace the print folder on your hard drive with the print folder on HiCAP CD-ROM (CD-ROM:\\HiCAP 2000\HiCAP Metric [or USC]\print). Then try print/print preview again. If this does not work, then your analysis file is probably corrupted. Delete the file in Project Manager and re-create the analysis.

I select the Toggle Tool Tips command under the Help menu, but nothing happens?
Tool tips are those yellow text boxes that pop up when the mouse hovers over some buttons. Selecting the Toggle Tool Tips command will turn these pop-up texts on and off.

The installation (Setup.exe) does not run.
If the installation does not work, follow three simple steps to install HiCAP manually. (1) Download the required fonts and install them in your computer. (2) Open HiCAP CD-ROM and copy the HiCAP 2000 folder to desired location on your hard drive. (3) Double-click on HiCAP.exe in the Metric folder or HiCAP_US.exe in the US Customary folder to run HiCAP. Both folders are in the HiCAP 2000 folder.

I only see part of a summary page in the Project Manager; how do I view the rest?
Click and hold down the mouse while dragging the summary page up and down to view the entire page.

Nothing happens when I click on tabs in the summary page.
The bottom pane of the Project Manager displays the summary of an analysis and therefore is not interactive.

I open an existing project and see all my analyses, but how does one open one of the analyses to make changes?
There are two ways to access an existing analysis. You can double click on the analysis item in the top pane. Or, if the analysis summary is displayed in the bottom pane, double click on the summary page.

Is the displayed average queue the total queue or per lane?
The average back of queue displayed is the total queue (in vehicles) per lane group; hence, divide the queue by the number of lanes to obtain the average queue per lane.

When I change the signal type from pretimed to actuated, and hit the Calculate button, the results get unreasonably better. (Chapter 16 - Signalized)
The unit of extension is likely zero or missing, which leads to zero incremental delays and better LOS. Input the appropriate unit of extension and hit the Calculate button again.

The Signalized module adds a bogus through lane to the eastbound approach.
With repeated modification of the lane configuration, the Signalized module can erroneously add a through lane to the eastbound approach. The bug is being corrected. Meanwhile, you can simply delete this through lane.

The saturation flow rate in Signalized module is incorrectly computed or not updated.
When the user moves through the saturation flow rate fields, HiCAP wrongly accepts the current values as input by the user, and therefore display in black and would not update the saturation flow rates. Go back the saturation fields and delete the black entries. HiCAP will now recalculate the saturation flow rate to reflect changes.

In TWSC (Chapter 17 - Unsignalized Intersections), how do I change direction of the north arrow?
Move the cursor to the north arrow. The cursor should turn into a crosshair. Click to the left, right, or bottom of the north arrow circle to set the direction. Headings for data fields will be updated automatically to reflect the change.

My mouse does not work in the Preferences module.
Most navigation in the Preferences module can only be done with the Tab and Shift+Tab keys.

How do I save a new analysis?
Once you have a project file opened or created, you will be able to start an analysis. When there are sufficient data in the new analysis, the Save New button will save a copy of the open analysis to the project, while clicking the Save button will save changes made to the open analysis.
